Lone Pilot by GriffinLeather Lone Pilot by GriffinLeather
A bit more traditional in style. All formed and stitched leather. Plastic lenses and rubber gas mask hoses.
The rivets are heat treated to give them a more industrial look and driven from the inside out for a flat surface. The hoses are removable and snap to the side of the hood.

Most of the leather is veg tan, but I put it through a process I developed in my shop. Not traditional water formed leather. Thats how I get the complex shapes with very few seams and its very very firm.

LOL. Ya, I dont own one. But I do have a skull box sitting on my desk. It dosent have straps on it, just a box.
I am going to look into other items like backpacks but they will probably be expensive. But it is art more than functional items.

Beautiful leatherwork. I'd have said more dieselpunk or post-apoc that steam but excellent workmanship regardless of category

I have deeply respect of your way of art. really.
I am intrested in gasmask myself, but there's only new modern mask in my country... and I'm not really a big fan of those.
I see you maybe can make gasmasks for customers?

It depends on the detail. One like Lone Pilot goes for about $500 if its a direct sale through me. More if its through a retail store or ebay.

Man, I just like looking at it! This may sound strange, but some visuals have a way of grounding me, inspiring me, and just taking me out of a funk. This is one of those.

I would so love to learn how make things like this.

I encourage you to read a few books and then try out a few projects. But dont fall into the "thats the way its done" mindset. I do quite a few things with leather that the old timers will tell you "it cant be done" and I did it.

how do you mold the leather. I'm gonna make one but my last one was a horrible fuckup so I want to make sure i don't keep wasting money.

Well, I developed my own process for shaping leather. And Its a bit of a trade secret.
But the traditional way is refered to as Cuir-bouilli. And translated it means to soak or boil leather till its plyable and than rapidly form it before it cools and dries. The soaking can be done with hot, warm or cool water depending on the disired effect. The hotter the water the more shrink you will get from the leather and the harder the leather will form up. Some people have used rubbing alcahol to form leather.
Another method is to steam it, but that requires a steam producing machine and can distort the leather if not applied evenly.
Sorry I cant tell you how I do it, but I dont use any of those methods my self. But I have in the past with good results. I suggest you google and look at the vids and write ups on the subject. Then start with smaller projects to get the hang of it before any big projects.

If you want more advice or have questions, just send me a note or email. I have no problem on helping others interested in the same art form. One other thing. I would start out with 2 to 3 oz leather first. Vegtable tan leather.
